Kind of Wordless Wednesday: Resolutions

25 Jan

I can’t seem to post photos without talking about them so these post are never truly wordless…

I have been searching for inspiration for a photo for the theme Resolution.  Should I take a picture of my journal or my blog where I talk about my goals? Or me having fun with my girls since I resolve to spend lots of quality time with them?  I keep coming back to my grocery challenge – it has been so eye opening to try and stay on a food budget.

Today I am doing something I have never done before – I am making soup from leftover chicken carcasses we have since we smoked chickens this weekend on the big green egg.  We smoked 3 of them, knowing we’d have leftover chicken for another night or two and that is frozen in the freezer.  However there was still a lot of chicken on those bones, and so I am trying to make Chicken Soup (I think Chicken & Rice since I have a ton of rice in the pantry).   I have never done it from scratch.  I know this is not a new thing for a lot of people, but I am oddly weirded out by the concept so it is not something I ever would have attempted were it not for our budget resolution.  [In addition, this will be a pretty healthy meal for the family - also a part of our goals for the year.]

So here is the picture – my resolution has led to me simmering celery, onion, carrots, spices and chicken carcass together on the stovetop.  I actually really like how this photo turned out with the curve of the pot and I’m sure it will end up a delicious dinner for my family.

Wordless Wednesday: My Self-Portrait

18 Jan

So after lots of thought – I finally decided on how I wanted to take my self-portrait.

Some of my favorite photos of kids are when they are enjoying themself on a swing – and since I definitely want to focus more on enjoying simple pleasures like that this year, what better than a shot of me swinging?

This definitely had challenges – I had to use a tripod and a remote with a 2 second delay so I could trigger it and get my hand back to the chain on the swing.  I tried serious, smiling, not looking… For those who know me, smiling ended up the way to go.  In college, I think I was known as that girl who is always smiling.  The serious photos are just not me at all.

The timing was very hard to work out since I was moving.  In the end though – I got this picture.  When I look at it I really see myself, how I see myself, in the photo – so for that reason I really like this self-portrait.

While I liked the color version of this photo as well – I love editing in this more dramatic black and white style.  It is based off the look in the movie 300, just with all the color removed instead of some of it.  Lots of contrast and black, but also lots of fill light.  I think it works great for this photo and I love it even more this way.

Thanks to Rock the Shot for such a fun contest to start the year.

Trimming Tuesday: Groceries

17 Jan

Trimming Tuesday is back.  One of my goals this year was to figure out how to control our grocery spending.  I found that even though I planned some of the time, I did not plan all of the time.  The nights when it was last minute would mean eating out or pizza.  Costco trips sometimes ended up a bit out of control – even if I bought things I would use – eventually.

So for the New Year we decided that was a category that would benefit from the cash budget.  I pulled out cash at the beginning of the month.  It is in an envelope.  That is what is allocated for the month for all food – that means eating out as well, and liquor.  It even includes items like diapers.

It is January 16th and right now I have food through Friday night the 20th.  I then have about $50 of that money left in the envelope for the last 11 days of the month.  Needless to say, this challenge has been eye opening.  Now granted, a large part of why we are down more than I would like is that I had to buy not only diapers, but prilosec… and we decided since the prilosec was on sale, to go ahead and buy two boxes of it.  Those two boxes not being purchased would pretty much double what I have left for the rest of the month.

Now it really isn’t as dire as I am making it sound - I actually have enough meat for the rest of the month (probably) frozen in the freezer, and I have a couple cans of beans too, and a big bag of rice … so mostly that money needs to buy fresh items like fruit and veggies.   So while it will be tight and a close call – I think I can manage fine.  Definitely means no family meals out for this month.

One thing I use to help with the meal planning is E-mealz.  I’ve talked about them before – for $5 month they help you plan your meals based on your grocery and that groceries specials for the week.  What I am getting better at is filling in meals based on what we already have in the house so things do not go to waste.

Also, I am not someone who tends to do extreme couponing.  I tend to only use coupons that are easily found online.  I am however being more aware of the available coupons, as well as the BOGO weeks.  [I love Publix BOGO.]  This month though, even with a tight remaining budget – I did spend the money to buy a Sunday paper to dig through for coupons to help us get through those last 11 days.

Another benefit to this meal planning and budget – I have only eaten out once this month, for a business lunch.  I am eating much less processed foods and haven’t had fast food a single time.  I have lost 3 pounds  in two weeks and that is before I started my exercise training for the 5k (1st workout today felt great!)

So far this challenge is … well a challenge.  However, the results – the feeling good about losing weight, the feeling good about saving money… learning and opening my eyes… has been very rewarding.

How do you save money on your groceries?

Goal Picked… Start Training in 3…2…1…

13 Jan

I want to get back into an exercise routine, but I find without a goal in mind – it is hard to get motivated.  I needed something tangible.  I didn’t want to sign up for something major yet like another sprint tri – last time I over did it an injured myself.  I wanted something that was very do-able so that in three months I could really check it off my list and do it well.

I happened to find the perfect thing.

Apparently 2012 is the inaugral Dacula Dash 5k in late March – literally just a couple miles from our house.  That gives me almost 3 months to do the Couch to 5K training plan.  After the 5k they have a fun run for the kids – which makes it even more great.

A 5k is a great goal for me because for one thing, I haven’t really exercised in months other than the occasional walk or short bike ride.  I don’t consider myself a runner, and running is a challenge for me.  I have a treadmill in the basement however, so cold is no excuse.  A 5k is very attainable, and I know I can do it – but it will still take the training to get me there.

So I am going to sign up – anyone want to join?

Starting Monday I will be doing the C25k challenge and tracking via social media and this blog.  I’m excited!

Self-Portrait, Take 1

11 Jan

So in my efforts for one of the projects – the January photo challenge of a self-portrait – I had a great idea!  I took this photo back in the summer of Amelia and you could see me pretty clearly in the reflection in her eye.  I thought I would try something similar with Katherine today.  I guess it is not 100% creative when you have done it before – but it was an accident in the picture of Amelia, and this was intentional.

I’m posting the results because they are cute pictures of Katherine – but I couldn’t get my reflection quite right.  In the sunglasses you can see me, but it blends too much with the window and on the one without glasses, even zoomed in, it wasn’t what I wanted – so try try try again.

This 2nd picture is so Katherine – so totally worth the time to take the photos!

[Note: I promise my blog isn't going to all be photography - I have other stuff I want to discuss too like budget/grocery and exercise.]

Here Go the Projects…

09 Jan

So I’ve decided on a couple different projects for photography to help me work on my word for the year – Creative.

One is Project 24 – http://www.florabellacollection.com/project-24.html …. not too many rules only you have to take or edit fresh – no old photos.  I like the idea of spreading 24 themes out over the year and that I can change order if I need to….

Another is MCP Project 12 – http://www.mcpactions.com/blog/2012/01/01/mcp-project-12/.  This one is a bit more structured but only 12 themes, one per month.  Right now I’m figuring out what I want for ‘Resolutions’ – I have some ideas in the works, but since it is about stretching myself, still thinking it through.

Lastly, I want to keep entering into Rock the Shot’s monthly challenge – this month is a self-portrait.  http://www.rocktheshotforum.com/2012/01/06/january-photo-challenge-self-portrait/  This one might be my greatest challenge.  I want something different, to really set the tone for the year.

So that is what I’m working on personally, with photography, this month.  I’ve seen others out there doing classes & challenges – list them in the comments, I want to know!

[Note:  While these entries go into Flikr groups for the projects themselves, I will share here as well - I want to document my journey.]

This picture has nothing to do with the above challenges – I took it to document Amelia’s weekend with their class mascot Marco – but considering it was with an iPhone – I love how it turned out!

Help Me Decide Which Theme…

04 Jan

Okay so I want to do some sort of personal photography challenge this year – kind of like the 365 idea where you take at least one picture a year.  I don’t want to do that because I think if there is a day I need a break, then I need a break.  But maybe if I pick a theme, and go for 52?  So one a week?  What theme could I strive for in 2012…. I guess my word of the year personally is Creative – maybe it is a 52-week challenge of at least doing something different once a week with my photography – something that isn’t my normal family & kid shot….  or other themes in my head are ‘sisters’, ‘girly’, ‘no people allowed’…

Thoughts?  Help me decide!  I’d love for you to join me as well.  If anyone wants to join I will create place to share the photos.

I’ll post them here on this blog – as Wordless Wednesday moving forward starting next week… (it’ll be from this week – week 1.)

Thanks!

Sidenote – I also intend to enter more photo challenges online this year – I find they just help me stretch myself.  So you will see those on this blog too.  Pioneer Woman, Rock the Shot, Learn Shoot Inspire… these are all places where I enter contests… if you see a fun one let me know!  (I like the ones that do not require you to ask for friends to vote for you – just based on merit of your photo.)

New Year, Not Really New Me

03 Jan

Happy New Year!  I hope all my friends and family out there had a great holiday season.

I feel like I’ve written this blog in my head a few times over the last couple weeks – but now I am finally sitting down and writing it so I am sure it won’t make as much sense.  That’s how it works.

New Year’s Day is the day reserved for making resolutions.  I find that resolutions are not really what I want – resolutions seem like easily broken all or nothing sayings… for me, I like to think about how I want to shape my life for the next year.  My aspirations for life for myself and my family.

This year, I think it really comes down to a lot of small changes I would like to start making, to just become a slightly better me.  Realistically, I like who I am and where I am in my life.   My family makes me so happy and I feel blessed.  There are always areas to work on, of course, and so those are the small changes I am going to focus on this year.  It’s not a all or never attitude – it is one of gradual change to make these changes into habits and just a part of day to day life.

Here is a somewhat random list of the small changes I am working on, and that you might see discussed here on the blog in 2012:

- Meal planning.  I started using e-mealz last year, and when I use it – I love it.  You pick your grocery and type of menu (portion control, family friendly…) and it uses sales from that week to help plan your menu.  Just having a plan helps save money, but factor in the sales and it really can help save.  This year I want to be more consistent on using it and factor in lunches more as well.

- Budget.  An added layer to above, we are taking a Dave Ramsey-esque approach to our food buget.  The food category is the one that seems to be the most controllable, yet the one that most easily spirals out of control with eating out, last minute meals, etc.  So this morning I pulled out our cash for the month.  That is all the food money for the entire month, with the exception of a few dollars for Chris to eat out once a week at work.  If at the end of the month we are doing well, we can splurge on a family meal out or we can save that money… it is up to us.

- Organized.  We moved just about four months ago, and we are starting to settle.  I now want to start tackling a room or closet – maybe one per week or one or two per month – and truly get it organized and settled.  Get rid of trash, give away excess, make it usable.  I love how it feels to be organized – I just have to work at it.  This actually includes cleaning up the zillions of mailing lists my email seems to be on, as well as computer files.

- Exercise.  Exercise is always an up or down thing with me… I get on wagons, get off them… get injured… even did a sprint triathalon last fall.  (2010)  I just want to go for more consistency, and that includes waking up early if necessary to make it a part of a routine.   I don’t want to run a marathon.  I just want to be in good healthy shape.

- The Small Things.  Having green tea (with healthy antioxidents) instead of a 2nd cup of coffee with half and half.  Eating a small piece of pure dark chocolate (again, healthy!) instead of carb-loaded random snack I find and crave.  I picked up the latest O magazine and Dr. Oz had 28 tips for a New Year – I really did not know when I bought it if it would be extreme, small… it turned out to be just about perfect for me.  You don’t have to do them all at once, but gradually over time add them in and end up just in a healthier place – body and spirit.  Other things included beyond to above two were taking 5 minutes to meditate, take your vitamins, get quality sleep… basic stuff when you think about it.  The small things.

- Journal.  Whether it is here through this blog, or in my journal – documenting my journey really helps me.

Final thoughts for today – one of my blog inspirations – mentioned that she picks a word each year to help define her path for that year.  A word that resonates with her.  The word I keep coming back to this year is Creative.   I have always defined myself as ‘not the creative one’.  However as my photography business has grown I keep getting drawn back to that word, that thought… and I think that is my word for 2012.  While it easily applies to photography and pushing myself to be creative in addition to technically sound, it also applies to everything above.  Creative ways to budget, creative ways to fit in exercise and blogging… 2012 is my year to stretch and be creative.  I have a really good feeling about this year.

What better way to end the post than with a picture of my main inspiration – my girls – from New Year’s Eve.  We explored a little hike near Highlands called Sunset Rocks and while we were not there late enough for the sunset it was beautiful and the whole family enjoyed our time up there.

Christmas Tree, Three Ways

27 Dec

Inspired by pictures on Pinterest – I captured photos of our Christmas tree three different ways. I truly love all three of them – I don’t think I have a favorite.

This was the most standard of the three shots… mostly in focus, just letting the lights of the tree be the light of the photo.

This one I used a very high F-stop, allowing me to star the lights on the tree, like I often do with the sun.  I had to let it take a longer photo to allow enough light, so the camera is balanced on a couch.  I’ve heard this called the ‘twinkling’ effect.

Last was purposely out of focus – just a tree of light.  This one is magical in its own way.

Do you have a favorite?  I’d love to see pictures of your Christmas trees!  I’ll be sad to take it down this week.  I love sitting by the lights of the tree.

I Am Thankful

24 Nov

Happy Thanksgiving!  I am so thankful for my family and friends and I hope everyone is having a fantastic holiday.
